Here you will find information and a video about how hand blown crystal glassware is made. And, tips for choosing wine glasses that are appropriate for your needs.
How is hand blown glassware made?
Glass blowing is an art form that requires a great deal of training and skill.
The glass is made from sand, limestone, soda ash, potash and other ingredients that are melted in a furnace to over 2000 degrees farenheit. At this point, the glass is a burnt orange color.
The major tools involved are the blowpipe, and a marver, which is usually a flat block of marble. The tip of the blowpipe is first preheated; then dipped in the molten glass in the furnace and rolled over th marver. Next, air is blown into the pipe, creating a bubble which the artisan shapes with various other tools.
Finally, the glass is placed in a cooler furnace and allowed to slowly cool over a period of a few days. This makes for a stronger product that is less likely to crack.
There are many ways to apply patterns and color to blown glass, including rolling molten glass in powdered color, etching, and painting.
YourBeautifulKitchens unique collection of exquisite blown glass stemware and decorative glassware styles are mouth blown and hand decorated by artisans in Romania.
After the glass forms are created by an artisan and allowed to cool, they then go to a craftsman who etches or paints the intricate designs by hand. Some collections use 24K gold luster and platinum in their design. In addition, some lines are personalized with the artists signature on each piece.
